Fried Okra Recipe

Try this delicious fried okra recipe for a different side dish with a zesty chunky tomato dipping sauce.


8 ounces of fresh or frozen whole okra thawed

1/2 cup of yellow corn meal flour

1/2 tsp paprika

1/2 tsp cayenne pepper

1/4 tsp salt

5 drops of Louisiana hot sauce

1 egg

Vegetable oil for frying

(Tomato Dipping Sauce)

8 oz can tomato sauce

1 small chopped onion

1 seeded and chopped green bell pepper

1 teaspoon of chopped garlic

1 and 1/2 tsp olive oil

1/2 tsp chili powder

1/8 tsp black pepper


To make chunky tomato sauce, In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine tomato sauce,chopped onion, green pepper, garlic, olive oil, chili powder and black pepper. Cook for 15 minutes until the flavors blend. Set aside.

While sauce is cooking, In a cast iron skillet or heavy stainless steel pan, heat about two inches of the vegetable oil over medium high heat.

While oil is heating, slice the stems and tips from the okra.

In a bowl, combine the first five ingredients. In another small bowl, beat together egg and 1 tbs water. Coat okra with egg mixture.

In small batches, fry the okra until its golden brown in color about two minutes. Using a slotted spoon, remove the okra and transfer to a paper towel to drain. Serve with chunky tomato dipping sauce.
